Infographic: British Homes Through the Ages

Published by Joanna Whitworth in

It’s been over 50 years since Plumbs first opened for business. Today, life in Britain is virtually unrecognisable – and so are our homes. We’ve seen more than our fair share of trends come and go, and we’ve noticed that our interior choices always reflect the times much more than we think. Design trends are as influenced by cultural change as by designers themselves.

Another thing we’ve noticed is how our sofas have remained the nucleus of our living areas. We’ve watched generations grow up on the same one, and have seen what a great source of nostalgia they are in British homes.

Our infographic aims to demonstrate two observations: it’s a recap of the last 7 decades of interior design, and how one sofa can stay at the centre of the family home with just a few changes to keep it updated. Which decade is your favourite? And what does your family sofa mean to you? Leave a comment below!

Trend Alert: Clever Copper

Copper has been everywhere in interior design over the last year or so and its popularity doesn’t appear to wavering.  The trend is even taking over our high street stores from light fittings to kitchen utensils and bathroom fixtures.

Why is this trend so popular?

Stainless steel has been the staple metal of choice in our homes for many years, and so it was difficult to imagine another metallic becoming so popular, however the glamour, grandeur and versatility of Copper has helped propel this hue into our homes.

How to use incorporate the Copper trend into your home?

Whether beaten, aged or shiny, this warm metallic tone is perfect for any season and works well with both vibrant and neutral colour schemes. Team with grey and white for a calm and contemporary feel, dusty pastels for a playful feminine feel, or for an intense and moody vibe - deep indigo blues.

Here are some of my best copper finds..

This colour also looks great on the walls; take a look at the Colour Predictions blog we posted towards the beginning of the year looking at Dulux’s colour of the Year – Copper Orange.

Kids Have Flown the Nest? It’s Time to Refresh Your Home!

If your children have grown up and recently moved into their own homes, it may be hard at first to adjust to a quieter “empty nest”. It can also be an exciting time in your life - you can begin to truly enjoy your home again, reclaiming the space and creating an environment for yourself to spend time relaxing in. Here are some simple tips to employ to revamp and refresh the main rooms in your house.

Refresh Your Furniture: Choose Light!

We’re all guilty of choosing darker fabrics that can hide a multitude of sins - now there are no kids or teenagers around, however, it’s time to embrace a fresh and bright new look! A neutral base colour works well on both sofas and chairs because it creates a blank canvas for you to add splashes of colour to with bright or patterned accessories such as scatter cushions and flowers.

Throw out the Throws: Upgrade to a Loose Cover

Throws can be a useful solution when you want to protect your furniture from small feet and dirty hands, but after years of moving them after they slipped, it may be time to put them to better use.  If you no longer love the style of your sofa’s fabric, a better alternative to a throw is a removable loose cover.  They still have the advantage of being washable - yet are much more close fitting, stylish and practical. (Don’t know what loose covers are? You’ll be amazed at what a good solution this is for giving sofas and chairs a facelift. See how they work here.)

Update your Accessories

People find that when they have children they tend to hide away anything fragile or impractical, especially if you have boys that like to play indoor sports!  Now that they’ve moved on you can begin to reintroduce those accessories that make a house feel more homely – without the fear of shattered pieces.

Reclaim Your Bathroom

Sharing a bathroom with teenagers can take it’s toll on any family.  Some mornings in a busy household can feel like Piccadilly Circus, and you can almost guarantee that everyone will want to use the bathroom at the same time!

Now is the perfect time to take back your bathroom and create a haven. Without the hair products, make-up, and general clutter that teenagers tend to acquire, your bathroom may seem quite bare - fill this extra space with items that create a calm and happy atmosphere.  Fresh flowers, pretty perfume bottles and tasteful art will create the indulgent yet relaxing space you deserve.
